The Thomas C. Chalmers Centre for Systematic Reviews was established in 1998 at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (CHEO RI), with a mandate to provide the knowledge base to help clinicians make informed decisions about the management of children and families in their care.
The centre was named after Dr. Thomas C. Chalmers, a highly respected and accomplished physician, researcher and administrator, who was an acknowledged leader in the design, conduct and evaluation of clinical trials and systematic reviews. Dr Chalmers went on to publish several hundred articles in his lifetime, including a landmark paper on the development of evidence-based medicine.
The Children and Youth Clinical Trials Network (CYCTN) was also established in 1998 at the CHEO RI with a mandate to promote, facilitate and support clinical research at CHEO by providing research services such as coordination and data management.
In 2000, the talents and teams of the Thomas C. Chalmers Centre for Systematic Reviews and the CYCTN merged to form the Chalmers Research Group (CRG), aiming to meet the continuing demand for excellence in evidence-based research. Since the spring of 2007, as a growing team, CRG has redirected its mandate to focus specifically on evidence synthesis in healthcare, and related methods research.
CRG endeavours to continue Dr. Chalmers’ legacy in the quest for excellence in health research.
